Where can we eat in Kamloops and the surrounding areas?
We came from a city on the coast and now we live inland. We came from a place where hole-in-the-wall, authentic ethnic cuisine reigned supreme, to a land where chain restaurants and dodgy dives flourish. This blog is to chronicle our culinary adventures in region that seems to be a culinary wasteland.

Cheryl's Place Restaurant - Cache Creek, BC

Cheryl’s Place is located just off the Cariboo Highway in a dusty parking lot, attached to the Petro Can Gas Station, beside the Bear’s Claw Lodge in Cache Creek. Not only is it a truck stop, it’s a Grey Hound stop too.

Butterscotch Peanut Butter Marshmallow Squares a.k.a Butterscotch Confetti Squares Recipe

I’m feeling a little junk foodish today. These squares show up all the time during holidays and random potlucks. Recently, a co-worker of mine was chatting about this retro treat, and the conversation reminded me of the last time I ate these sweets at the Ashcroft Bakery and Coffee Shop.

Carolyn's Cozy Cafe - Kamloops, BC

Still on my breakfast kick. This is Carolyn’s. Is it still called Carolyn’s Cozy Café? In any event, Carolyn’s is a DDE located amongst the buildings that make up the Acadian Motor Inn on Columbia Street.

Katryna's Perogy at Summit Gourmet Meats - Kamloops, BC

You like pierogi, and I like pyrohy.
Pierogi, pyrohy, perogy, pirogi
Let’s call the whole thing off.

No let’s not, because pierogi are tasty. (It’s late. Apologies to Gershwin lovers.)

Caffe Motivo - Kamloops, BC

It is a sunny but cool day on the Northshore of Kamloops today. I stop for a quick bit of lunch over at Caffe Motivo. I contemplate heading over to the garden center later as well.

My peas, that I sowed two weeks ago, are coming up. So exciting. I’m learning this gardening thing a bit as I go. Last year I learned: No, I cannot leave garden plants out to fend for themselves, in the middle of summer, for a week; with no water.

Smooth and rich. Perfect with a...

Buffalo Station - Ashcroft, BC

**UPDATE 2012: Buffalo Station is now closed. Shelley's Place now occupies this space.**

Having some breakfast this fine morning, at the Buffalo Station in Ashcroft.
Apparently, “wellness awaits” me in the Village of Ashcroft.

Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant - Vancouver, BC

I first went to Happy Valley about five or so years ago. I was driving out of Vancouver around midnight, and it happened to be open. DL spotted it while we whizzed by on East Broadway. When Happy Valley first opened, they had late-night hours and were open until 1 or 2 am. The next time we went for late night snacks, they had tweaked their hours to close at 11pm or midnight.

Heartland Family Restaurant - Cache Creek, BC

Hello Cache Creek, it’s been a while. The Heartland Family Restaurant is a diner attached to the Sandman Hotel in Cache Creek, BC. Heartland is located across the street from the Husky Gas Station Restaurant and next door to the Lordco.

The Zoo Ice Cream Parlor and Crêperie - Kamloops, BC

Speaking of Slashy Establishments...here’s another:
The Zoo Ice Cream Parlour and Crêperie. The ice cream-crêpe shop is slashed with Kamloops Cigar and Pipe Store. What a mix! This place is straight up wack...in the best possible way.

I can understand if you’re thinking its a little DDE-ish from the outside.

Club Malz (malta drink) at Gary's Deli - Kamloops, BC

Another malt beverage find at Gary’s European Sausage and Deli! I make regular stops at Gary's for deli offerings, and malt drinks. On this particular day Gary’s Deli is out of Karamalz, but I spy Club Malz occupying its place inside the cooler. Let’s try!

Club Malz ($1.65)
