Went to the Central Cafe for lunch. It's a quaint little cafe in the village of Ashcroft. The cafe has a Facebook page and a website if you care to check out a sample menu.

We started with some home made iced tea and peppermint tea. ($1.49; $2.29)
Real home-made ice tea is just so far superior to anything that would come out of a can or powder, I don't why more restaurants don't do this.

The tea pot spout was awful, it was one of those spouts that leaks about a third of your tea onto the table rather than your cup.

We were the only patrons in the cafe for a little while so when given the menu the owner operator came to chat. We asked what's the best thing on your menu. He replied the kalamari and the Bar M Burger. Okay, now you know I am skeptical to say the least about eating seafood so far inland... but hey he said it was the BEST thing on his menu!

Kalamari with Greek Salad and pita ($11.99)

The sides were fantastic. The vegetables were fresh and were lightly dressed. The humus for the pita tasted home made and had great texture in my mouth.

Now the kalamari was a different story. I've eaten a lot of kalamari, and usually even with the most inexperienced staff in the kitchen it is hard to completely cock up. Look at the picture.

Take note of the colour of the panko or breading. Now, if kalamari is screwed up it's usually over fried. But the Central Cafe version was arguably not cooked enough. When I put it in my mouth, I could tell the breading was still squishy and soggy (as in uncooked breading). When the owner came over to ask about it, I thought the most appropriate thing to say was that, "I preferred my kalamari a little more crisp." The service at the cafe was so genuine and lovely, that I couldn't bring myself to tell him it was soggy and the worst I've ever encountered.
Is my own fault for going against my own eating rule of eating seafood no where near water?? Perhaps. This is NOT the best thing on their menu. It's worrisome that an establishment is not able to execute what the owner/operator himself touts as the best item on his menu.

The Bar M Burger ($12.99)

The meat, we are told, comes from one of the local ranches. Excellent. We try as much as we can with our groceries at home to purchase food as local as we can.
I didn't eat the burger but I am told the burger was delicious and huge. Definitely worth it if you are a burger lover. The patty tasted like you are eating steak. The bacon was perfectly crispy and not overly salty.
The Bar M Burger included soup or salad or fries. Fries were initially ordered as the side, but
after finding out the soups were house made, we went with the Asian Chicken Noodle soup. As you can see on the receipt they charged us for a caesar??? Hmmm....???

Very decent chicken soup, but I'm not sure what made this "asian".

This is not the first time I have eaten at the Central Cafe. I have had wonderfully positive experiences here with eat-in, take-out, and catered foods. This is another reason why it was so disappointing to have that kalamari incident to tarnish my positive track record at the cafe. It is unfortunate that the day I decide to blog about Central Cafe I had the kalamari. The value was pretty standard (even with the confusing charge of caesar salad...) the above came to $30.20.

If I had not had previous great meals from the Central Cafe, I may be saying to you folks..."stay the hell away." But The Central Cafe is really one of the gems out in this area. I love the fact they try to make as many in-house items as possible and they try to utilize local products and resources. The service is authentic, friendly and attentive. The decor is like your favourite granny's sitting room. The room is filled with antique-ish looking items and has an old warm charm to it.

There's not many places to eat around Ashcroft and I would have to say The Central Cafe is promising. It's worth the drive off of the 97C when you're hungry.

*Update September 18, 2010: Central Cafe seems to have gone through some changes. It has a smaller limited menu now, and the some of the focus is directed towards antiques sales. This is understandble as the business is now up for sale. I have not been back since the above visit. Perhaps someone else could chime in a comment about how the food is lately.

**UPDATE February 14, 2011: Back by popular demand...Central Cafe is now re-opened as Central Catering. Some old favourites are back on the menu but now it is pick-up orders or delivery only. NO DINE-IN.

Central Cafe is closed

Since last summer of 2010.

Re: Central Cafe is OPEN AGAIN

Hi Anon,
Actually, Central Cafe is open. You can check their Facebook page for timely updates.

"The Central is now open for sit-down, in-house dinner service 6 nights per week....Tuesday through Sunday, from 4 PM to 8PM. Closed on Mondays." - March 19, 2011 as per Central Cafe wall post.

They did close for a short while last year in attempts to sell. But, as mentioned in my updated comments below and my blog entry, they are back with a more limited menu and hours. At first they came back just doing pick up orders and catering gigs. But now they are open for dinner as Central Cafe and Catering.

So if you loved Central Cafe previously you can now go back and enjoy dinner! They do pizza too!

Happy eating.

Central Cafe Open Again

Hi, John here at the Central Cafe - Good news - We are also open for lunch as well as dinner, offering home-cooked meals not available in the other local restaurants.

We'd like to thank you for the kind words of support on your site, and we haven't missed the messages in your blog about the Central - the offending dribbly teapot is no more, the Caesar salad charge was an obvious screw-up (our sincere apologies) and the kalamari is off the menu (even more sincere apologies).

I'm not aware of any restaurants in Ashcroft that have been closed by Interior Health Authority due to violations as suggested by one of your readers. Perhaps there were some closed in the past, but none recently that I'm aware of....

There seems to be, however, a chronic problem in the village of Ashcroft where restaurants are concerned: people are under the mistaken impression that the cafe business is a fast track to riches and so they appear and disappear at an alarming rate, a situation that led to our own closure last fall. Too many restaurants offering the same menu is a recipe for failure in a small town....

I am glad to tell you that my wife's health has improved since we shut off the deep fryer, and hopefully the menu we now offer will have an equally beneficial effect on our customers' health as well.

Keep on with the reviews, and don't let the nay-sayers grind you down! If anything, your critiques should keep operators on their toes and address any problems they may not have been aware of.

I don't expect you to post this on your site, I just wanted to say thanks for your honesty and support!

Re: Central Cafe OPEN again

Thanks for chiming in John!
Glad to hear you are open for lunch again. It's nice to get the correct info straight from you.

I've received a number of "what's the deal with the Central Cafe" emails from folks confused with regards to what days and times you are open. I just refer them to you Facebook page for the latest info. I hope some of those inquires resulted in new patrons for you!

It takes great conviction to shut off the deep fryers. Well done you! Now I'm not sayin' I don't indulge in hot oil treats more than moderately, but I imagine it takes a lot of culinary talents to create daily flavourful meals without the vice of the fryer.

I do miss your Chicken Caesar Wraps; I didn't see them on the last take-away menu earlier this year.
However, the Prime Rib dinners you've been posting on Facebook sound very tempting...

I'm sure all Ashcroftonians appreciate that the Central's home-made whole foods menu is back! Please continue the excellent efforts in making Central Cafe items from scratch, and showcasing local ingredients when possible.
Also thank you for taking the time to comment!
Happy eating.
L

Central Café Catering RE-opens

The Central Café has reopened as Central Café Catering. Opened Tuesdays to Sundays from 4:00-8:00 for pick up and delivery orders only. Nice to have you back.

Central Cafe

The Central has closed its doors for good, which is a tragedy because they had the best food in the whole area. All the other restaurants in and around Ashcroft have copied their menu, and done a crappy job of it, too! We'll miss the Central, no one else we've tried has come close to their class at all....

Central Cafe

Thank you for the update!
