I do love me a good farmer’s market. How can I not make a detour to check out what’s happening at the Kelowna Farmers and Crafters Market? The only downside for me visiting farmers markets is the in-my-face reminder of the slow state of my own amateur garden.

Super weather today for an outdoor market, sunny but not hot. When I arrive the market is in full swing.

A bounty of local produce as far as the eyeballs can see.

Cherries

My favourite kind are Rainer cherries. Rainers are super sweet and they don’t stain my clothes. They are usually available in July, but perhaps due to weather they may be a little late. I didn’t see any today.

Onions and Garlic

Dried Apple Cinnamon Slices ($5.00 for 150grams)

The Dried Fruit Guy dries mostly apples but they also dabble in drying other fruits. I picked up some dried cinnamon apple slices for snacking.

If you’re low on cash and have some Canadian Tire money, he will gladly accept that as canuck currency as well.

Green Onions ($1.50 per bunch)

Glenmore Garden Market is just one of the many produce vendors this afternoon. Look at the size of these green onions!

Seasoned pita ($3.00 for two pieces)

From the lovely lady that oversees the Taste of Jerusalem. I had these with dinner instead of the typical dinner bun.

Some rustic looking birdhouses.

The chickadees that made a home in my birdhouse this Spring, had their chirpy nestlings devoured by marauding magpies. Circle of life, I guess. It’s still pretty darn traumatic to witness; much like the opening barracuda scene in Finding Nemo.

Strawberries ($8.00 for approx 2lbs)

On my way out I stopped at Hoa Mai Berry Farm and nabbed a basket of these beauties.

I see that most customers are seasoned pros, and didn’t fart around with buying the baskets. They just grabbed a flat. In hindsight, I wish I did the same. These are ridiculously sweet and plump. I ate them with cream as a dessert two nights in a row.

The Kelowna Farmers and Crafters Market is well attended by both vendors and customers. It is buzzing with business the entire time I’m meandering through filling my cloth bag full of goodies. I’ll try to plan another visit for later in the summer. In the meantime, I’ll be tending to my meager (mostly experimental) garden.
